Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) Custom for Oracle, a managed database service for legacy, custom, and packaged applications that require access to the underlying operating system and database environment, now supports Oracle Database Standard Edition 2 (SE2).

You can deploy SE2-based Amazon RDS Custom for Oracle instances for Oracle database versions 12.1.0.2, 12.2.0.1, 18c, and 19c. In addition, you can also deploy Oracle Multitenant container database (CDB) hosting one to three pluggable databases (PDBs) with Oracle 19c database version. The Oracle policy on PDB licenses states that “Oracle Database 19c now supports up to 3 pluggable databases (PDBs) per container database (CDB) without requiring additional multitenant license.” You should consult with your own legal team to determine if the above suits your use case.

To create a SE2-based Amazon RDS Custom for Oracle DB instance, you start by building a custom engine version (CEV) by supplying your SE2 database installation media files and selecting Standard Edition 2 in AWS Management Console, or specifying custom-oracle-se2 or custom-oracle-se2-cdb engine version in the AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI).

Amazon RDS Custom for Oracle supports SE2 in addition to existing support for Oracle Database Enterprise Edition (EE). Both SE2 and EE are available only with Bring Your Own Media (BYOM) model.
